The Institute for Neurosciences UMH-CSIC hosts the XIV Congress on 5p- Syndrome and rare diseases, December 11-12 2023

11 de December de 2023

The assembly hall of the Institute for Neurosciences (IN), a joint center of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), will be the headquarters, for another year, of the 'Congress on 5p- Syndrome and rare diseases: genetic anomalies and intellectual disability'. The event, which celebrates its fourteenth edition, will take place this afternoon and tomorrow from 4 to 9 p.m.

Throughout the two sessions of the congress, Salvador Martínez Pérez, who directs the Neurobiology of mental, neurodegenerative and neuro-oncological diseases laboratory at the IN; Carlos García, head of the independent VIDA office of the Juan Carlos Pérez Santamaría Foundation; Elena María Martín, APNEA psychologist; Silvia Martínez, director and physiotherapist of the NeuroNova Clinic; and Juan Carrión, president of FEDER and the D'genes Rare Diseases Association, will participate.

This is an initiative organized by the Fundación Síndrome 5p-, a non-profit organization made up of families whose children suffer from this rare or uncommon disease. The foundation's motto is “Never take for granted that they can't” and its objectives include raising awareness among the population about the characteristics and needs of those affected by 5p- Syndrome and similar pathologies, as well as their families.

The 5p- Syndrome, also known as Cri Du Chat or Cat's Meow because of the characteristic crying of babies who suffer from it, is caused by a loss of genetic material from the short arm on chromosome pair 5. The chances of suffering from this syndrome are 1 in every 50,000 children and it is estimated that in Spain there are around 900 people affected by the syndrome.

This congress is coordinated by the researcher Salvador Martínez and its realization is possible thanks to the collaboration of the ASISA Foundation, the Institute for Neurosciences UMH-CSIC, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, and the Severo Ochoa Excellence Program.
