The Brain Awareness Week 2014 at Instituto de Neurociencias

The Institute of Neuroscience at Alicante, a joint center between the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University Miguel Hernández de Elche, will celebrate "The Brain Awareness Week ", as in previous years, along with 340 other institutions around the world that are associated to the Dana Alliance Foundation (www.dana.org ) for the promotion and dissemination of Brain Research. With this occasion, the Institute organizes an exhibition sowing the main areas of neurobiological research during March 11-13. The time scheduled for the visit is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. During those days, the Institute, located at the San Juan Campus, will be open to the general public (from 5 years old to retirees), including visits from elementary and secondary schools as well as university students from the province of Alicante and from adjacent province schools (Valencia, Albacete, etc). The exhibition will consist in the exposition of a typical basic research laboratory. The topic will focus on animal models used for understanding the function of the human brain. The visitors will have the opportunity to see on different tables several species of experimental animals such as fruit flies, fish, chicken and mice, which normally are used in brain research. Visitors will learn the advantages of each animal model and the histological procedure to process those brains for identification of neural population in the microscope. Finally, and thanks to the collaboration of the Faculty of Medicine, (Dpt. Histology and Anatomy), the visitors will have the opportunity to see firsthand the morphology of the human brain.
