  • The Remedios Caro Almela Award recognizes the work of European researchers who have made outstanding scientific contributions in the field of developmental neurobiology.

The Institute for Neurosciences, a joint center of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), has opened the call for the 12th edition of the Remedios Caro Almela Scientific Award for Research in Developmental Neurobiology. This award honors the careers of European researchers in this field and includes a prize of €25,000. The prestigious award aims to highlight and support the work of scientists who, from several perspectives, contribute to advancing knowledge in developmental neurobiology.

Applications may be submitted starting the day after the summary of the call is published in the Diari Oficial de la Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV) and will remain open for 15 calendar days from that date. The prior publication in the Official Bulletin of the UMH (BOUMH) can be consulted here.

Eligible candidates must focus their work on developmental neurobiology, regardless of the specific scientific approach taken, provided their recent research and current scientific activity have been conducted in Europe. Applicants are expected to be in an upward phase of their career, marked by high research productivity. The jury will especially consider the strength, originality, and impact of the candidate’s career, as well as the relevance of their contributions to the advancement of the field.

Applications must be submitted in English and include the official application form (Annex II), a list of scientific achievements, five key publications, and a complete CV. Documentation may be submitted through the UMH electronic office, the General Registry of the University (Rectorate Building, Av. de la Universidad s/n, Elche), or by any means established by current legislation.

An internationally renowned jury

The award jury will be composed of internationally recognized figures in the field of neurobiology and will be chaired by Juan José Ruiz, Rector of Miguel Hernández University. Among its members are Silvia Arber (Friedrich Miescher Institute, Switzerland), Pierre Vanderhaeghen (Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium), and Frank Bradke (German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, DZNE), all of whom are previous recipients of this award. As well as Professor Richard Morris, Director of the Remedios Caro Almela Chair of Neurobiology. Juana Gallar, Director of the Institute for Neurosciences and Professor of Physiology at UMH, will act as Secretary of the jury.

A legacy of excellence

Since its creation, the Remedios Caro Almela Scientific Award has helped showcase cutting-edge research in developmental neuroscience and strengthened the role of European science as a driver of progress. In addition to those mentioned above, previous editions of the award have honored distinguished figures such as Óscar Marín, Alain Chedotal, Magdalena Götz, Christine E. Holt, Stephen W. Wilson, Rüdiger Klein, François Guillemot, and Barry J. Dickson, whose research has marked milestones in the study of the mechanisms underlying the development and plasticity of the nervous system.

The Institute for Neurosciences highlights that the Remedios Caro Almela Chair, a cornerstone of this award, was established thanks to the vision and commitment of Mr. Fernando Martínez, to whom it expresses its deep gratitude. The Institute also extends its sincere thanks to the entire Martínez Caro family for their continued support and dedication to promoting research in neurobiology.
